Review: Anthem for Jackson Dawes

Megan Bright and Jackson Dawes are two teenagers who first meet each other on the hospital ward where they are both being treated for cancer. Megan is scared and worried about her illness, but Jackson seems to be an old hand, having been on the ward for ages. And everybody loves Jackson! He is a whirlwind of life and energy, warmth and sparkle. Megan will need to borrow some of Jackson's extraordinary optimism to face her and Jackson's future. A moving story of first love and a remarkably powerful debut novel.

My thoughts

Anthem for Jackson Dawes is a beautiful story about friendship, first love and loss. It'll have you smiling and laughing at some parts and a sobbing mess at others as you follow the story of Megan and the boy she meets while in hospital receiving treatment for cancer.

Megan first meets Jackson as he literally runs into her when she is first admitted to the children's cancer ward for her first chemotherapy treatment. She's confused and scared, even though she doesn't let on, and at first she really isn't interested in the charming boy who forces himself on her even though everyone else is completely taken by him. However over time she finds herself becoming friends with the only person in her life who has any idea about what she is going through and is keen to spend time and go exploring with him.

I won't tell you anymore about the plot but be rest assured it'll keep you hooked from the first page to the last and by the end you will be left an emotional wreck. Please be sure to have a box of tissues to hand before you start reading!

A beautifully poignant read which reminds me of a younger version of Jenny Downham's Before I Die or John Green's The fault in our stars. Highly recommended!

I just bought a copy of this for my kindle, so I'm really excited to see you enjoyed it! I loved TFiOS and Before I Die, so seeing that Anthem for Jackson Dawes reminded you of those books makes me really happy. Great review!
I really love the sound of this, especially if it's like Before I Die or TFiOS! Glad you enjoyed it :)
I loved this one too Kirsty, it was a lovely story! But alas, I had no tissues at the ready and had to stop reading to go get some at one point in particular, though there were a fair few that required them!
